The Gleason score is important because it can be used to predict the behavior of the tumour. It is determined by adding up the two most prevalent Gleason grade numbers. Gleason score. The most common scale used to evaluate the grade of prostate cancer cells is called a Gleason score. Gleason scoring combines two numbers and can range from 2 (nonaggressive cancer) to 10 (very aggressive cancer), though the lower part of the range isn't used as often.

Gleason scores can be expressed as their individual components or as the total Gleason score, eg 3+4=7. The highest a Gleason score can be is 10. The first number assigned is the grade that is most common in the tumor. For example, if the Gleason score is written as 3+4=7, it means most of the tumor is grade 3 and less is grade 4, and they are added for a Gleason score of 7. Scores 2-5 are currently no longer assigned and certain patterns that Gleason defined as a score of 6 are now graded as 7, thus leading to contemporary Gleason score 6 cancers having a better prognosis than historic score 6 cancers.

Automated Gleason Grading The Gleason score is the most important prognostic marker for prostate cancer patients but suffers from significant inter-observer variability. We developed a fully automated system using deep learning that can grade prostate biopsies following the Gleason Grading System. A simple solution is new Gleason 1-5 grading scale as described by the pathologist, Dr. Epstein.
